The first trip to the dentist is a big moment for children and parents alike. With a little preparation it can be something your child looks forward to.
When to book
Bring your child in when the first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. The earliest visits are short and mostly about getting comfortable with the room, the chair and the people.
Before the visit
- Keep it positive and simple. Say the dentist will count their teeth and make them shiny.
- Avoid scary words such as needle, drill or hurt, even to reassure.
- Play dentist at home. Take turns counting teeth with a toothbrush.
- Pick a good time. Mornings, after a snack and a nap, work best.
At the appointment
Young children can sit on your lap. We show every tool before using it, let them press the chair buttons and finish with plenty of praise.
Afterwards
Celebrate the visit rather than rewarding with sweets. A sticker chart for brushing twice a day keeps the momentum going at home.
Children take their cues from you. If you are relaxed, they usually are too.
